Fresh flowers are one of the most exquisite of life’s pleasures.  They’re also here today and gone tomorrow.  Their beauty is sweet but it’s also all too short.  So is there anything we can do to protract our enjoyment and their lives?.

Florists and flower wholesalers do their bit to ensure that you buy the freshest flowers.  These few tips from online florist in Perth, Perth Florist Direct, will help keep your beautiful flowers and flower gifts holding their heads high.

Once you’ve made your purchase – it’s all about speed.  Flowers detest car journeys, so forego the coffee or the sandwich stop if you’ve been at the florist..  Heat and flowers aren’t a good mix, so when the temperature is climbing, you need to get them home FAST!.  Turn the dial on the airconditioning to its lowest setting to keep them cool and try and place them out of direct sunlight.

As soon as you get home, grab a bucket of cool water and place the flowers in it, right up to the top of their stems.  A top tip is to spray a fine mist of water onto the petals and leaves to freshen them up.

Be sure to rinse out your chosen container or vase to ensure that it’s absolutely clean.  Detergent and flowers are not a good mix, plus residue from previous flowers can cause infection and damage to your fresh ones.  If you have flower preservative, add the sachet to the full vase.  These should be included with every bouquet from a reputable florist. Use these powerful little packets as directed as incorrect dosage can do more harm than good.

Once the vase is ready, snip about a centimetre off each stem. Make sure the secateurs are sharp for a clean cut. The best way is to cut soft stems straight along and woody stems on the angle.  If there are any leaves below the waterline, strip these off to prevent the water from being contaminated by rotting material.

You can always bind your arrangement together with some twine to help keep its shape.  This will facilitate taking the bunch out when you change the water.  If you receive a bunch that has already been tied, it’s probably best to leave the binding in place.

The water in the container should be topped up regularly, particularly if the weather is very hot or humid, and it should be replaced with fresh water completely once every three days or so, says Perth florist.  Any dead leaves or petals should also be taken out of the water as these could cause algae to build up which isn’t good for the fresh flowers.  Any dead leaves or spent flowers should also be removed to prolong the life of the arrangement.  Snipping stems regularly will also prolong the life of the flowers.

Even if the arrangement has water-retaining foam, it will need to be topped up regularly.  The way to do this is to trickle water slowly into the centre of the arrangement to make sure it absorbs up properly.

And lastly, try and position your flowers in a ‘happy’ place.  They prefer temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius, and should be placed away from direct sunlight or any heating or cooling vents.  They should also be kept away from electrical appliances such as televisions, microwaves or heaters which give off heat.  And amazingly, flowers and fruit don’t always mix. The ethylene gas that some fruits emit during ripening can actually speed up the rate at which the flowers perish.

And the most important tip of all, is to revel in the beauty of your fresh flowers.  They may not last forever, but the joy they give is stunning.  Flowers are the very best of Mother Nature, says Perth fresh flower delivery specialists, Perth Florist Direct.
