There are quite a few types and names for wind power generators. It is a device that transforms mechanical energy of transferring air into usable energy somewhere else . The oldest wind turbines are windmills, which turn the energy of wind into mechanical energy for pumping water, grinding grain, etc. These are still in use today.

The most recent breed of wind turbines are wind power generators, generally called wind generators, wind turbine generators (WTG), or aerogenerators. These change the moving energy of wind into electricity ( thus the term “generator”). They vary in size from micro-turbines mounted on homes or huge automobiles to large wind generators made to commercially create power.

The majority of today’s wind generators are horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) with a tower supporting an electrical generator from which a shaft is turned by blades. In bigger , commercially used generators however, they use 0.7-1.0 megawatt (MW) range of production generally turn bit by bit and utilize gearing to speed up that slow turn of the shaft before it spins the generator. With the smaller home units, the blades are rotating at higher speeds to generate power.

Depending on the sizes, home generators or Micro-turbines generally generate 0.5-5kW (kilowatts). These generators can operate in wind speeds as low as 4 miles every hour or as high as 50mph. To retain them from damage throughout high-wind conditions, most generators have safety systems and vibration control mechanisms as their protection.

The designs of micro-turbines are particularly made to endure many circumstances . The smallest are built to mount on the rooftops of homes or outbuildings with others requiring a purpose-built tower. Selected systems are made to include other renewable sources of power, such as solar, and battery storage for 24/7 electric power access. Other units, yet , can provide enough power to maintain the usual home or large household electrified.

Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT), in contrast , are used in smaller applications for example home and ranch. We have those that stands upright with bent , vertical blades, resembling an egg beater pointing into the air. These are called Darrieus or “eggbeater”. These have their own problems, though several are overcome with newer design elements.

The most usual “home brewed” type of wind turbine are similar to these units. These are most frequently based on the gyromill or Savonius kinds of turbines. Straight, vertical blades or cupped structures turn a vertical shaft to generate power.

Examples of these are the backyard wind turbine made from oil barrels sliced in half to create “cups” or with framing strung with tents or sails to trap the wind and turn a turbine. These are usually the cheapest-cost and most common kind of do-it-yourself wind generator.

One of the most effective , lowest-cost, and simplest to administer types of renewable energy are these wind power generators. In North America, these are the most usual kind of another energy.

When building windmills, people think about how to increase their efficiency. In order to do that, they analyze the components. The most important components of a windmill are, of course, windmill blades.

The first thing to take into consideration when talking about windmill blades is their number. The more blades a windmill has, the harder will be for it to rotate. The old ones used to have 4 very heavy blades. Most of them were use in grain grinding. Nowadays, the most recent windmills are equipped with two or three blades.

The length is important too. If a blade is longer, it covers a larger surface when it rotates, therefore they can catch more wind with every rotation. This may lead to more torque. To protect the windmill blades we mustn’t forget about their surface. If we provide them with efficient maintenance, they will last longer and will also be more productive.

Also, the shape of windmill blades influences their rotation. There are a few different shapes of windmill blades: the flat, rectangular ones, the wing shaped ones and the ones with both edges tapered to a thin line or both edges rounded like the ones of an airplane wing. In the case of the horizontal axis windmills, the wing shape has proven to be by far the most efficient one. The vertical axis windmills works very well with all the shapes of the windmill’s blades, but the best performance is given by the flat ones and the ones with both edges rounded.

Regarding the material with which the windmill blades are made from, if we think about the old ones, they were usually made from wood. Even though those windmill blades are made of wood, their structure changed over time. They are lighter now so they can spin faster. A common material which brings a high performance due to its sharp edges and its light weight is carbon fiber. Another material that is light, but also cheap is PVC. It is a synthetic material often used for windmill blades. New materials are always being tested, in the hopes of finding a cheaper, more effective solution.

Windmill blades are constantly developing, even though they appeared a very long time ago. At their beginnings they were somehow inefficient, but people learned to develop them and to make the windmills a desirable source of energy. Many more shapes and materials have and will be for windmill blades and people start using more and more this alternative source of energy that will not only save our money, but also our environment.
