This is it, you have finally found your dream home; it seems perfect, everything is in place, at least until you get to the master bedroom. This is something that occurs all too often. Even though that room is small the rest of the house is exactly what you have been looking for. The living room and kitchen are perfect. What can be done to make the master bedroom look and feel more spacious? How do you make the master bedroom look and feel more open? This article offers many tips and ideas that will assist in visually opening space in your room. Any small room can benefit from these tips.

The appearance of space can be a simply accomplished feat. You don’t need to sacrifice personality and style when making your room look open, all that is necessary are a few small changes. Here are a few ideas that will help you create larger looking spaces that can be used not only in your master bedroom, but in many other parts of your home as well.

Use Mirrors!
You have probably heard of this trick millions of times before, but it works. On your bedroom wall, just opposite of a window, you should hang a mirror. The window’s reflection, especially with light colored curtains, makes the room appear spacious and sun filled. This can also be applied to one of your bathrooms, or your living room.

Paint – The Solution for Many Problems
You can do many things in your home with the help of paint. Small bedrooms should have light colored walls. Cream, off-white and soft pastel shades of peach and yellow are great colors to use in a small room. White paint for the ceiling will add a lighter look to the room. Using light shades will open up an area, while darker ones diminish.

Floors Should Be Light as Well
Keeping your floors lightly colored will add visual space to any one of your rooms. If carpet is your preference, light colors such as cream and sand should be used. In the case you use wood flooring good choices are light colors and natural woods. If you do not have the means for replacing a dark colored carpet, light colored rugs can always be added to each side, and the foot, of the bed.

The appearance of a headboard is usually quite bulky. Removing the headboard and replacing it with a large tapestry or rug hung on the wall behind the bed can easily solve this problem. Doing this will add a more spacious and open feel to the room. Try to hang swing arm lamps on the walls instead of using a lamp on a night table to open up the top of your night table.

Here is a cool tip: Use light colored curtains that are higher and wider than your windows in order to visually open up space in the room! With this, the room will appear more open and airy because the illusion of larger windows will add a new dimension to the room. If you have the room, opening up the floor area can be as easy are moving a chest or drawer into a closet.

You should also keep any comforters, curtains and throw pillows lightly colored instead of using darker tones. Remember, using dark colors recedes and diminishes the area; these colors absorb light, this is not what you want! Just keep things as light and as open as possible. This way your master bedroom will look large and spacious.

The southwestern style is a very natural and comfortable style for any room and using your fireplace as a focal point in a southwestern room is not only natural; it is almost a given. The rustic country aesthetic or Southwestern style makes you reminisce home and hearth and naturally centers around the fireplace. Decorating your mantel in southwestern style combining metal wall sculpture and natural elements can make your room feel cozy, homey and naturally appealing.

Mexican and American Indian Accessories
To get a real southwestern style feeling in your fireplace you will want to use rustic texture and geometric shapes. Both Indian and Mexican influences create natural and balanced design pulling colors largely from nature. Neither one is scared of bold and bright color, either. Both influences use natural textures as well as natural materials. In a room with light colored walls, mount a roughly hewn log for the mantelpiece to bring a little of the outdoors inside. Another option is to paint the wall directly above the fireplace a dark version of the wall color. For illustration, if the walls are a light ivory color, you might select a butter yellow above the fireplace or even add outdoor wall decorations. This way you can highlight the fireplace as the focal point without overpowering the room.

Texture and Color
The southwestern style is replete with hand woven fabrics and baskets as well as hand thrown pots and handmade terracotta tiles. A cluster of hand made tiles above the fireplace makes an exciting display. Hanging a cluster of native baskets is not only a conversation piece, but it is colorful as well. A tapestry or wall hanging either in bright colors or earth tones pulls the eye up and above the fireplace cementing it as the room’s focal point. Add to the room’s authentic feel by displaying a hand thrown pottery vase on the mantel that is filled with colorful wildflowers. By bringing in texture in the form of wrought iron wall sconces or candlestick holders, you are complementing the textures that are seen on the mantel and bringing the Southwestern look to life. When displaying items on the mantelpiece, you can line up pairs of items for a symmetrical look, or display items in groups of three for a less ordered appearance to your display.

Finishing Touches
Of course the southwestern style is strongly influenced by both Mexican and Indian style, so the rustic blankets and baskets from each culture are probably more alike than different. By using a large, hand-woven basket as a holder for several colorful native blankets, you will invariably have a comfortable quilt to lie beneath as you watch TV or read. The native blankets are typically beautifully colorful and bestow a bright spot to the fireplace. You can always opt to use blankets that are all in the same color scheme, like earth tones, or you may select assorted bright colors like yellow, magenta and turquoise. The bright colors give the sense of a basket of wild flowers freshly picked from the garden.

Southwestern style is always appropriate. The look is colorful and simplistic and works well during any season. It is an ideal place for displaying holiday decorations and beautiful on its own any time of year.
