How to Apply For Citizenship in the Dominican Republic

For those who want to become a citizen of the Dominican Republic, going through all those procedures, filling forms and processing all those documents is a very tiring experience (not to mention the costs). That is, if you are thinking of applying for citizenship in the tropical haven, Dominican Republic, you must first know the steps on how to apply for citizenship in the Dominican Republic. Listed below are steps on how to apply for citizenship in the Dominican Republic.

1. The first step on how to apply for citizenship in the Dominican Republic is that the applicant must first go to the capital city of Santo Domingo and apply for a provisional residency. The requirement for this application is that the applicant must take a medical examination done inside the Dominican Republic. The whole process only take about two hours and the applicants need not be frightened of the said examination.
2. The second step on how to apply for citizenship in the Dominican Republic is that the applicant must submit all the documents that are needed in the application (i.e. passport, original/certified copies of birth certificate, and a letter of good conduct from the local police department). And in addition to that, the applicant must have some kind of asset inside the Dominican Republic. This is usually done by opening a bank account inside the country. A background check by the Interpol is the longest phase in the whole application process.
3. The next step on how to apply for citizenship in the Dominican Republic is that once the applicant has obtained the provisional residency (good for one year) and the applicant’s primary cedula card (also good for a year), the applicant can actually proceed to apply for citizenship in the Dominican Republic. The next step is to apply for a “Permanent” residency. The applicant will then undergo the same process as mentioned above.
4. The last step on how to apply for citizenship in the Dominican Republic is that the applicant must have a very skilled lawyer to assist with the preparation of proper documents. The whole process of the citizenship application takes approximately five months to finish. Once the application is submitted the applicant must make himself/herself available at all times for an interview. The applicant is usually asked to show his or her knowledge of the country. Once the interviewer is satisfied and grants the application for citizenship, the applicant is then required to attend an oath taking ceremony wherein the applicant is given with the proper citizenship documentations and certifications. These documentations and certifications allow the new citizen of the Dominican Republic to apply for a passport.

Once the applicant has become a citizen of the Dominican Republic, he or she will have the same benefits as local citizens of the Dominican Republic have.
