However, people tend to become a little less vigilant on vacation and feel invincible in some ways which can lead to problems.
Regarding your passport, it is vital that upon arriving in your hotel room you immediately place it securely in the hotel safe. You should not carry it around with you for any reason other than when you absolutely need it. Obtain a map of the nearest consulate that can help if you do lose it or have it stolen.
Always keep money and valuables hidden or locked in a safe. Leaving your valuable belongings visible in your hotel room, car or on your person advertises your possessions to potential thieves. Keep cameras in a carry case or bag, leave your expensive jewelers at home and lock your passport and other papers in your hotel safe, if you have one.
Play it safe when travelling by car. Keep your car doors locked while driving and park in well lit, populated areas whenever you can. If you get lost whilst travelling and find yourself in a run-down area, stay in the car and leave the area immediately.
Travel smart on the bus. Sit as close to the driver as you can so that you can ask questions about your location and know when to alight for your destination. Do not sit at the back of the bus as this area may not be well covered by on-board CCTV.
Finally, hotel safety is important. Select a secure hotel on a well-traveled street so that even if you come back late at night you can walk more safely. Instead of staying off the beaten path, reserve a tourist hotel that is heavily populated. Never open your hotel door to someone you don’t know, and double lock your door when you are in. In addition, make sure that there are security mail boxes and at least a lockable filing cabinet in it.
