History of Aromatherapy Oils and Treatments

You may not know this but aromatherapy oils can do more than scent the air and your body. Many aromatherapy essential oils also have healing properties and have long been touted as cures for different ailments. The first essential oil was discovered a long, long time ago, yet it was not until the 1920′s that the aromatherapy term was applied. You may be interested in knowing how this term was brought about and how the researcher/scientist found this out the hard way.

During the 1920′s, a French chemist by the name of Rene Maurice Gattefosse was researching essential oils. He was trying to discover the properties of these oils and their use in healing. Quite by accident, Gattefosse burned his arm by catching it aflame. He quickly submerged his hand in a nearby vat of liquid, which just so happened to be lavender oil. What did he discover? He discovered that the burn was soothed quickly and later realized that the healing time of the burn had been dramatically decreased. He began labeling this essential oil with the term “aromatherapy” due to its therapeutic qualities. As well, he wrote several aromatherapy books.

Aromatherapy oils have long been known to the world. Using them may not have been called “aromatherapy,” but they have been used for their medicinal properties for quite some time. Take for example Jasmine. Jasmine is a popular tea that is supposed to have calming effects on the mind and body. It is still put into tea as well as being used for massage aromatherapy. Lavender, as illustrated above with Gattefosse discovering its healing properties, is used heavily in aromatherapy for its soothing qualities. Vanilla is another soothing aromatherapy essential oil used quite frequently, and as you may know, it is used quite a lot in baking.

If you are going to use aromatherapy oils in your life, then you need to know that there are a few ways to use the oils. Aerial diffusion, direct inhalation, body applications and oral applications are the ways you can use an essential oil to help boost your mood, health and spirit. If one particular method does not seem to work as well for you, then you can always try a different combination of delivery methods to give you the results you wish.

Before discussing the aromatherapy diffuser advantages we should mention that aromatherapy is both a preventive and active approach to treating and generating physical and emotional healing energy. It is known that many of the properties of pure aromatherapy essential oils have had positive effects in numerous psychological and physical disorders and health problems. Holistic practitioners believe in the power of aromatherapy essential oils so strongly that they recommend many pure essential oils to help in clearing energy centers in patients’ bodies.

The history and benefits of aromatherapy, using pure essential oils, is well documented in many aromatherapy books, articles, and aromatherapy medical publications, and has proven to be an effective method of treating various emotional and physical illnesses. The practice of using aromatherapy through pure aromatherapy essential oils and the aromatherapy diffuser to enhance feelings of well-being can alleviate frustration, depression, stress, and anger, as well as clean and tighten the skin, disinfect and clear the sinuses, warm or cool the body, and refresh and inspire the soul.

In aromatherapy, the best use of essential oils is the topical application through massage, soak or hot or cold compress. Essential oils can also be used in skin care products, body sprays or relaxing or sensual baths. In addition, essential oils can be absorbed through the nose, by inhaling the vapors directly from the bottle, through an aromatherapy diffuser, room spray, dissipation by a light bulb ring, or humidifier. Now we can discuss one of the means by which aromatherapy works, the aromatherapy diffuser. The aromatherapy diffuser provides an easy and convenient way to disperse the healing fragrances of essential oils all over the rooms in your house.

As different oils have different therapeutic effects when inhaled, the aromatherapy diffuser obviously plays an important role in aromatherapy. The aromatherapy diffuser can use heat or fans to make the oil warm and to fill the space with the healing fragrances of essential oils. Some of the most common of the aromatherapy diffuser devices are: candle diffusers, electric heat diffusers, fan diffusers, and nebulizing diffusers. These devices consist of several different components each, to which is added the most important thing – the essential oil whose effects are desired.

The oils used in the aromatherapy diffuser differ from each other significantly. Actually there is a wide variety of essential oils that can be purchased from drugstores, bath shops, spas and other specialized stores. Some of the most widely used aromatherapy diffuser oils are extracts of basil, cedarwood, lemon, orange, peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood, and ylang ylang. Even though it is known that aromatherapy diffuser oils are beneficial to your health, before taking it up, don’t hesitate to consult your doctor, as in certain medical conditions aromatherapy might not do so much good.
