More and more economies are being developed. The requirements for energy power is greatly influenced by both of these circumstances. Today, this energy requirements is still being met with fossil fuels. The substances that are released into the atmosphere when burning non-renewable energy sources are harmful to our well-being and our world. That is why the search is on for alternative renewable energy sources. Our fossil fuel consumption comes with undesirable side consequences, namely global warming, acid rain and smog.
The solution to our energy crisis has for a long time been believed to be nuclear power. Nevertheless, we now know that this energy source poses its’ own threats.
At the moment, the greenest alternative to nuclear energy and fossil fuels are renewable alternative energy sources. Among all the different sources of renewable energy power solar energy, wind and marine power are the three major ones.
Solar technology uses the power that is contained in the sun rays to generate a source of light, heat and electricity. Wind power technology uses wind turbines to produce electrical power. Marine technology generates electrical energy from the waves and tides. Today consuming fossil fuels is still a dominant part of our power generation processeven though there are many alternative renewable energy types that are already available.
The aim of this article is to investigate these problems in terms of renewable alternative energy.
Any form of renewable energy power has the characteristic that it refills itself again repeatedly. While fossil fuels are non-renewable resources the sun, wind and marine power are in a sense unlimited resources as they will continue to exist for a very long time to come.
The fact that the consumption of alternative renewable energy does not produce any negative green house gases that pollute our air is a second advantageous aspect. For this reason renewable alternative energy is often seen as a clean source of energy.
It is certainly favorable for us as a society to use directly available forms of energy. Avoiding energy sources that are harmful to our health and our environment, such as nuclear power and fossil fuels will also benefit us.
Massive amounts of power are being produced by the sun daily. For our society it is a logical consequence to first collect this renewable energy power and then to change it into power that we can actually use. People are so motivated to use solar power in their homes mainly because it is an source of energy that is freely available in such vast amounts. Sunlight has has been used in housing for many centuries, in the form of windows as a natural light source and to assist warming the houses.
Recently an increasing number of people have begun to harness the energy from the sun to also make hot water for their household, too. Technologies that use solar energy such as solar hot water systems and solar heaters for swimming pools are continuously gaining in popularity.
During the process of producing electricity with wind turbines no green house gases are being dumped into the air. All of our country’s electricity needs could be satisfied with wind energy. Unfortunately, the speed with which wind power developed as an renewable energy power over recent years has been quite slow. The process of pumping water and grinding grain using windmills has been around for centuries. Theoretically, wind power is a a side effect of solar energy. The sun is all the time heating up different parts of the atmosphere while other areas decrease in temperature again after the sun has moved away due to the spinning of the earth. These differences in temperature also cause differences in atmospheric pressure. The result of these pressure differences in the atmosphere is wind. Lately, wind energy is developing fast as a new alternative renewable energy type. Wind turbines, the most often used wind technology, are rather simplistic but powerful. Rotor blades are being mounted to an power generator. When the wind blows it spins the blades and thereby rotates the generator. Electricity is then being produced by the machine. To profit from this type of renewable alternative energy many wind farms have already been build in many different countries. While many of these wind farms can be found on dry land more research is being conducted to support the advancement of offshore wind farms. Offshore wind farms could benefit from the stronger and more frequent winds that blow on the open sea. In the recent past numerous countries began to build very promising wind farms along their coastlines. With a further improvement of the implementation of wind power wind power could easily develop into one of our primary sources of energy. Nevertheless, to 100% satisfy all of our current and future electricity requirements solely with alternative renewable energy we need more efficient technologies.
