Regardless if you’re not an animal buff, you simply cannot resist the charm of the San Antonio Zoo. And a huge part of its charm lies in its 56-acre area that is home to more than 3,500 animals which represent 750 different species.
San Antonio Zoo came from humble beginnings. Colonel George W. Brackenridge, among the top citizens of San Antonio, deeded his land to the city in 1914 and placed several animals there which include monkeys, lion, bison, bears, and deer. This land was known as Brackenridge Park then.
The first two “cageless” exhibits in the country were exhibited to the public in November of 1929 at the San Antonio Zoo. Other significant additions were the Richard Friedrich Aquarium in 1948, and the Hixon Bird House in 1966. Currently, the bird collection is among the largest in the world.
There are a lot of varied animal exhibits at the San Antonio Zoo. Its residents include a huge collection of birds, numerous species of reptiles and mammals, and several amphibians.
San Antonio Zoo has earned the accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, making it all the more inviting. This accrediting organization ensures wildlife conservation and is driven to assisting animals adapt well to their natural habitats.
The San Antonio Zoo offers membership programs to their visitors. Members will be supporting the cause of the organization and will be getting exclusive benefits as well. Anytime is a good time to see the animals at the San Antonio Zoo. It is open the whole-year-round. Summer hours, that is, from Memorial Day until Labor Day, the zoo is open from 9:00 am till 6:00 pm. For its winter hours, applicable from Labor Day till Memorial Day, the zoo opens at 9:00 am and closes at 5:00 pm.
Since the San Antonio Zoo is a famous attraction of the city, do not underestimate the throng of guests who will show up during the same time you decide to visit the zoo. To avoid long queues or parking-related inconveniences, it is advisable to go there early. But even if you will be sharing the zoo with a thousand other people, it is still going to be well worth the visit.
