“I love this game,” is not only the promotional banner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) but has also become an emphatic cry among fanatics gaga over the sports. This is concretely personified with the locals residing in San Antonio where every time the Spurs can grab a title, they would party along the streets in the downtown area. There is a picture of total gaiety where people would be throwing confetti, honking car horns and waving flags as the entire city celebrate the victory of the team.
San Antonio Spurs is part of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Based in the city of San Antonio in Texas, Spurs is listed number two among the active franchises with the biggest winning percentage trailing behind the Los Angeles Lakers. The data was as of November 2006 where they were ushered to the recognition upon defeating the Miami Heat. The team had now out beaten the Boston Celtics who was the first, since March 30 of 1988, to statistically gain noteworthy number of games.
Before the San Antonio Spurs was identified as one of the top teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA), they had their own share of humble beginnings. The team started as the Dallas Chaparrals who played in the American Basketball Association (ABA). They were not a major hit which was characterized by poor attendance every instance the Chapparals had a game in Dallas. As a matter of fact, in the season from 1970 to 1971, “Dallas” was omitted from Chapparals and was exchanged with “Texas.” There was such move because of the plan to extend regionally. They then competed in Tarrant County Coliseum and Lubbock Municipal Coliseum but once it again, it was a failure.
Due to the unsuccessful ventures, Dallas Chapparals was up for sale. A group of businessmen headed by Red McCombs and Angelo Drossos bought what is now the San Antonio Spurs. They were the individuals responsible in altering the previous colors of red, blue and white to the present motif of black and silver. The Spurs readily became comfortable in San Antonio where they played in Hemis Fair Arena before a huge crowd. American Bastekball Association (ABA) veteran, James Silas, was still in the team who was joined with then future National Basketball Association (NBA) hall- of- famer, George “The Iceman” Gervin.
Today, the San Antonio Spurs is currently composed of Tim Duncan (21), Manu Ginobli (20), Tony Parker (9), Robert Horry (5), Brent Barry (17), Matt Bonner (15), Bruce Bowen (12), Jackie Butler (45), Francisco Elson (16), Melvin Ely (2), Michael Finley (4), Fabricio Oberto (7), Beno Udrih (14) and Jacque Vaughn (11). In the 2006- 2007 standings of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the team is second in the Southwest Division with 52 wins and 21 loses. With the figures, the whole of San Antonio eagerly awaits the championship game as the Spurs made it again in the playoffs.
