It’s important to vacuum your carpets on a regular basis if you want to keep them looking clean and fresh. However, even with regular vacuuming, your carpets will start to look dull and worn over time. The reason for this is that vacuuming is only able to remove loose dirt from the top layers of the carpet. Ground in dirt which is trapped deep in the carpet will not normally be removed even by the most efficient vacuum cleaner. Accidental spills, if not treated quickly, can often become slightly sticky after they dry and act as a trap for dust and dirt.

Obviously, vacuuming on a frequent and regular basis is a good first step to prevent dirt and dust becoming lodged in your carpet. The ideal scenario is that the dust and dirt is removed before it can become ground in and trapped. Heavy traffic areas – hallways, passages, the floor near doors, hallways etc. – should be cleaned at twice each week. If you have young children, pets, or both, then you may even need to do this three times a week. This should be an effective way to prevent dust and dirt being gathered and trapped in the carpet.

However, some penetration of dirt deep into the fabric of your carpet is inevitable. Accidental spills, muddy shoes and heavy traffic will, over a period of time, drive dust and dirt deep into your carpet and it will appear lifeless, grubby and dull. Since this dirt cannot be removed effectively simply by vacuuming, an alternative cleaning method must be employed.

One of the best ways to remove this trapped dirt is to deep clean your carpet periodically using a carpet washer. This uses water and detergent to loosen the dirt and then removes it. Depending upon your circumstances – the amount of traffic over your carpet, whether or not you have small children and pets – a deep clean using a carpet washer every 3 to 6 months will go a long way towards keeping your carpet looking clean, banishing odours and helping to prolong the life of your carpet.

As with standard vacuum cleaners, carpet washers tend to come in a variety of different styles and, as with standard vacuum cleaners, upright and cylinder models are the most common. You can rent carpet washers in DIY stores and larger supermarkets. You can even hire a professional carpet cleaning company to visit your home and clean your carpets for you if you like. You can also buy your own carpet washer, and the price of these cleaners is relatively low these days, so that may be an attractive option for many. If you do elect to buy your own cleaner then you will be able to use it to deal with any accidental spills and stains before they have a chance to become ground in and established.

Whether you decide to to buy or rent, regular use of a carpet washer to clean your carpets thoroughly will prolong the lifetime of your carpets and more than cover the purchase price or hire cost. Your carpets will have a fresh, clean appearance and be odour free. Especially important if you have young children of an age where they are prone to crawling around on the floor, the environment will be considerably more hygienic.
