Tiles each have their own different properties and can be purchased in both glazed as well as unglazed finishes. The best option to consider when tiling walls and floors are glazed tiles; they are by far the most suitable.

Baked in a high temperature kiln, the glazed tiles which are commonly referred to as machine-made tiles, are given a strong density of hardness and colour. For further reliability it is very important that you add a glaze coating to the clay, as it is porous in nature. Compared to unglazed tiles, they are far more stain resistant and are available in a wide range of tones, designs and colours. Wall applications and countertops are usually tiled with glazed tiles due their durable quality and glossy finish.g decorating bathrooms.

A glazed finish look can be found on Ceramic and Porcelain tiles; this kind of finish adds lustre and durability to the tiles. Most of the glazed ceramic tiles available in the market have a high density that allows very little and in some cases no accrual of moisture. If you want a durable tile that will last a long time then Porcelain or Ceramic will suffice, although Porcelain is said to be slightly better. Being baked in a kiln at a higher temperature and made out of a finer quality clay gives them the upper hand. Due to their high resistance to moisture and stains, these tiles are more suitable for both wall and floor tiling. They can also withstand high volumes of traffic. Ceramic bathroom tiles are still available however and are fit for purpose.

Today glazed flooring tiles have become quite popular and are the most purchased tile type. Glazed tiles are used for bathroom designs and kitchen wall and floor tiling because of their ability to work well in wet conditions. Countries such as; United States, Spain, Italy and Portugal will produce these. The quality of the tiles can be calculated according to the Porcelain Enamel Institute grading that rates the tiles according to their durability. Their ability to withstand abrasions and other external conditions is included in this. The quality of tiles is measured on a rating scale from 0-5; the 0 catergory being less likely to withstand force and the 5 class considered to be the best.

Tiles that will be subjected to heavy traffic and might be prone to dirt and heavy abrasions should be brought from catergory 5 as these are the most suitable. Busy areas, that are subject to constant traffic are the best places to go e.g. shopping malls, subways, airports etc. Just like any other tiles, glazed tiles need to be inspected carefully before they are bought for installation. The CE marking and the BS EN 12004 certification will show the quality of grading given by the manufacturer; you must check this. These grading of tiles will help you determine if the tile type that you intend to buy is suitable for the kind of application you plan for it. Purchasing the right kind of tiles is very important, so once you have checked and compared this rating against the PEI rating, then you can rest assured that your purchase has been successful.

This article examines the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles and explains potential areas of usage for ceramic tiles.Primary considerations for buyers are also included in the article; this includes the practical issues like eradicating dampness and bacteria.  This will help enormously when decorating bathroom areas.

Ceramic tiles are a very popular choice for bathroom tiles, because they are extremely versatile. When we talk about ceramic tiles in the UK, it is worth noting, that we are probably referring to procelain tiles.  Despite the name and the fact that we associate porcelain with being very fragile, porcelain tiles are usually stronger and more durable than ceramic tiles.  Ceramic is simply a name that has evolved because of the production of tiles within the ceramic industry!

Ceramic tiles are suitable for bathrooms because they have a variety of applications which make them perfect; they can withstand the conditions that bathrooms are subjected too such as wetness, humidity and steam.  Often we think about tiling in a bathroom as being wall tiles, but floor tiling is also exceptionally popular.

Tiling in a wet room simply finishes off the look of a contemporary and modern room, whereas if vinyl flooring is installed it can look fairly basic and as if corners have been cut to save money.  It may also be less durable than providing a tiled floor and can soon look somewhat dated.

Tiles come in different sizes, with different shapes and varying from the very large to tiny mosaic tiles.  They can often be single coloured or patterned and many now have Spanish or Moroccan influences, although some traditional floral tiles do still exist. In a larger than average room, some of the colours can be very strong and stunning but would not suit a tiny bathroom.

Opting for cheaper, standard tiles in a bathroom is simply not an option, since they will not last, will peel off the walls and whilst you may think that this could look somewhat ‘shabby chic’ the reality is that bacteria and damp can linger behind loose tiles. This is not a good idea honestly. In order to stop dampness taking hold in the bathroom you need to eradicate it quickly especially since it’s the wettest room in the house.Select timeless elegance and forget shabby chic!

The sheer range of ceramic bathroom tiles available now means that any taste and preference can be catered for.  The downside is that there are so many to choose from, that you need to give careful consideration to exactly what you are looking for, so that your bathroom achieves a coordinated and harmonious look.
