Minestrone is the Cornerstone in Italian Cuisine

Italians have and are continuously fascinating us with every exceptional culinary pieces they make. If you are one amongst the thousands of Italian cuisine enthusiasts, then this might be just the perfect appetizer before a tasty meal.

Soups have long been an Italian signature dish. By soups anatomy, they are just plain water added with meats and vegetable, then placed to a boil. It is known to bring forth many therapeutic benefits. Gone are the days when it was nothing more than just a staple morning drink. Today, some types of soup are even known to prevent illnesses and cure one. But for whatever purposes they may serve, soups will always be one of the favorites.

Minestrone is arguably the most popular Italian soup there is. It is even made and consumed throughout all the regions of the world. However each region has their very own variation to its preparation. Typically, Minestrone is a thick soup made with vegetables and sometimes added with rice or pasta. Some of the condiments that are used are beans, celery, carrots, onions, and tomatoes. There is no exact recipe for minestrone, because it can be made by adding whatever vegetables you desire. It can contain meat or can also be pure vegetarian.

Due to the absence of a predetermined recipe, the preparation of minestrone is not even the same across the country. It can vary from a thick consistency with purely vegetables on it to a more broth-like soup that may include other meats.

You might be just as shocked as I do when I found out that Minestrone is so popular that it even is more widely eaten than pasta all throughout Italy. It was intended for everyday consumption, first of because it is less costly at the same time very filling. Unlike other soups which are only for appetizers, minestrone is even considered as the main course most of the time. This so called soup is a part of Italy’s cucina povera, literally meaning cuisine for poorer people.

Unlike other Italian dishes, minestrone is a dish not made for its sake. To point out a clearer picture, whereas one would hunt for a rabbit with the intention of cooking and then eating it, people did not gather the exact ingredients for the purpose of making a hot bowl of minestrone.

For whatever purpose it may supply, or to whatever level of people it may serve, Minestrone will always be the soup that somehow gave Italy a name.
